Global Homeless Day would not be complete without highlighting the suffering of families / children immigrant asylum seekers as they travel from Nicaragua to Guatemala through Mexico to the Mexican - U.S. border.

Compass Children's Charity is an international non-profit, UK-registered charity, dedicated to the rehabilitation and defense of approximately 10,000 street children annually. These children have often been orphaned, abused and abandoned, and further traumatized by societal indifference. Compass Children's Charity gives the children practical things they urgently need – physical shelter, food and medical help – as well as psychological guidance. Additionally, Compass actively defends children’s human rights at an international level as the leading advocacy agency for children at risk in the Americas.

When: Throughout the year.

Requirements:

Proficient level of spoken and written Spanish
A minimum commitment of 6 unbroken months (ideally longer)
Fully fund: accommodation, flights, living expenses, general and repatriation insurance
Provide a current DBS disclosure, two written references and a statement of good health from your GP
Knowledge or experience in: human rights, child welfare, teaching, first aid, nursing, counselling, drug rehabilitation, secretarial/media skills, working with young people and adolescents, community outreach work.

Global Homeless Day Food Not Bombs

"Food Not Bombs started after the May 24, 1980 protest to stop the Seabrook Nuclear power station north of Boston in New Hampshire in the United States. The people that started Food Not Bombs share their first full meal outside the Federal Reserve Bank on March 26, 1981 during the stock holders meeting of the Bank of Boston to protest the exploitation of capitalism and investment in the nuclear industry. Even though we provide meals and groceries to thousands of people, we are not a charity. Food Not Bombs is trying to inspire the public to participate in changing society and focus our resources on solving problems like hunger, homelessness and poverty while seeking an end to war and the destruction of the environment. We are also showing by example that we can work cooperatively without leaders through volunteer effort to provide essential needs like food, housing, education and healthcare. When over a billion people go hungry each day, how can we spend another dollar on war?

Our website lists over 500 chapters, but we believe there are many groups that have not asked to be listed. We think there are over 1,000 chapters of Food Not Bombs active in over 60 countries in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, the Americas, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. We are active in nearly 500 cities in the United States and have groups in another 500 cities outside the United States. We have been told that there are over 60 groups in Russia but only have 15 listed. The same is true for many other countries.

Food Not Bombs provides more than free, healthy vegan and vegetarian food. We provide an opportunity for everyone to participate in solving the most important problems facing our world. We empower the public to take action and resist corporate domination and exploitation. We also provide food and logistical support to often marginalized people and social movements by feeding striking workers and their families, people participating at protests, and organizing community projects."

The National Coalition for the Homeless is a national network of

people who are currently experiencing or who have experienced homelessness, activists and advocates, community-based and faith-based service providers, and others committed to a single mission: To prevent and end homelessness while ensuring the immediate needs of those experiencing homelessness are met and their civil rights protected.

The National Coalition for the Homeless offers four educational programs that enable groups and individuals to learn firsthand from someone who has experienced homelessness. From sharing personal narratives to explaining effective advocacy practices, these individuals are the true experts on homelessness and they always deliver memorable lessons. NCH is also responsible for two national large-scale events that take place each year and manages 60 AmeriCorps VISTA volunteers in the field.

The National Coalition for the Homeless’ new report, Swept Away: Reporting on the Encampment Closure Crisis, examines the disturbing trend of forced removal of outdoor sleepers by law enforcement, city workers, or even private contractors.
“We understand that municipal governments are trying to respond to a difficult situation,” says Megan Hustings, Director of the National Coalition for the Homeless, “But further displacing people who have nowhere else indoors to go is an inhumane response.”

For 18 years the National Coalition for the Homeless has analyzed bias-motivated violence that leads to many deaths among the homeless community.

Global Homeless Day France

The Petites Soeurs des Pauvres (The Little Sisters of the Poor) is a Roman Catholic religious institute for women. It was founded in 1839 by Saint Jeanne Jugan. Jugan established the order to care for the elderly, having felt the need to care for the many impoverished elderly who lined the streets of French towns and cities.

"They do so much for lonely and poor people," said Francine. "My friend who was a widow with a very small pension called them to see where she could find some help. They took her in till her last day.

Women consecrated to God, we are an international religious congregation that is part of the Catholic Church.

As a result, our special mission is the service of the elderly poor, without distinction of cultures or religions. With the help of a large network of lay people, we welcome them to homes that become theirs, and form with them a great family , accompanying them with respect for their dignity until the natural end of life.

The ministry is established in more than 31 countries.
